... last night while HB was down...
i kept hearing this farked up noise outside...
sounded like an animal of some sort...
screeeeeeeeching and cawing...
like a really scary sound...
i thought i'd go outside to check it out...
but when i turned the outside light on,
the damn animal stopped the noise... prolly
cuz it was distracted by the light.
so after about 20 minutes of going to check,
i decided to leave the light on until it
became used to the light and would start
its 'noise' again.
finally it did it again.
i remember when i approached the door and
listened to it... it made me think instantly
to how myths of creatures were formed back
in the day... and how i associated this
sound to that of a harpie... because...
well shit... it sounded like one.
anyways... so i go outside and hear it...
and its SO MUCH LOUDER outside...
and i see this dude standing on the street
*i guess* trying to 'call' it down...
i assume it was some type of friggin bird
he had as a pet, and he was trying to get
it to come back down. he kept whistling
at it and the bird just went ape-shit with
its cawing and screeeeeeeeeeeeching....
it was pretty late at night... i was surprised
the commotion didn't arouse others to come
outside and have one of them neighborly
get-in-your-business 'block party' things.
so i go back inside and eventually deduce
that the dude must have either retrieved
the animal... or had given up and decided
to try in the morning with the sun...because
i no longer heard the bird...er...thing.
several hours later... i go outside to
fetch me dog...
and i hear the damned bird again... this time,
in my friggin backyard...
*update -- no bird (noises) this morning*

Yeah, i bet that's the way all those myths get going. Good thing the creature doesn't eat dog though.
Do you have any idea what kind of a bird it was?

Ya know in some states it is legal to hunt birds. I mean not of well they are pets.. but any "random bird that hindered my 3 hrs of VALUED sleep would meet some 12 shot buck. :-)

ironically... just after my initial post was made,
i was being picked up for the camping trip.
as i was headed to the truck, some neighbors
from a few houses down approached me and said
that their *insert strange bird breed* had
escaped and it was stationed comfortably in my
friggin tree in the backyard... and they asked
for permission to retrieve the bird.
so i guess everything went ok.
when i got home, however, there were a few
large branches (from that tree, i assume) sitting
beside the curb.
i guess the bird gave a little chase.
